The linguo-cultural type of ‘the Ukrainian’ in Ukrainian Litelrature: A study of the works of Olha Kobylianska

Abstract

Цель данного исследования заключается в описании оценочной составляющей лингвокультурного типажа «украинец» на материале произведений украинской писательницы О. Кобылянской (1863–1942). Для достижения данной цели в работе ставятся следующие задачи: рассмотреть взаимодействие языка и культуры и связанные с ним развивающиеся направления науки, провести сопоставительный анализ терминов «лингвокультурный типаж», «концепт», рассмотреть жизнь украинской писательницы О. Ю. Кобылянской и историю региона Буковины, описать ценностные характеристики лингвокультурного типажа «украинец». Ценностные характеристики лингвокультурного типажа «украинец» определены на основе анализа оценочных суждений литературных героев в произведениях Кобылянской. Для исследования отобрано шесть произведений: «Царівна» (1895), «Ідеї» (1903), «Через кладку» (1911), «Назустріч долі» (1917), «Вовчиха» (1923) и «Апостол черні» (1926). Творчество Кобылянской связано с историей и культурой Буковины, где издавна совместно проживали люди разных национальностей: украинцы, поляки, немцы, румыны, цыгане и др.В результате такого проживания складывается как представление об украинцах, так и отношение к ним. В результате анализа выявлены как отрицательные оценочные характеристики лингвокультурного типажа «украинец»: хам (в России до 1917 г. презрительное название крестьянина или простолюдина), попрошайка, лентяй, равнодушие к народным делам, народ без глубокой культуры, народ без страны, ненависть к полякам и восприятие их как врагов, так и положительные: склонность к творчеству, к поэзии; музыкальность. Литературные герои О. Кобылянской также подтверждают православие, униатство, украинский язык и т.д. как часть украинской культуры.

The purpose of this study is to describe the evaluative component of the linguo-cultural type of “the Ukrainian” on the material of the works of the Ukrainian writer O. Kobylianska (1863–1942). To achieve this goal, the following tasks are set: to consider the interaction of language and culture and its relation to developing areas of science, to conduct a comparative analysis of the terms “linguo-cultural type”, “concept”, to consider the life of Ukrainian writer O. Kobylianska and the history of Bukovina, describe the value characteristics of the linguo-cultural type of “the Ukrainian”. The value characteristics of the linguo-cultural type of “the Ukrainian” are determined on the basis of the analysis of the value judgments of literary characters in the works of Kobylianska. Six works were selected for the study: “The Princess” (1895), “Ideas” (1903), “Through the Bridge” (1911), “Towards fate” (1917), “The She-Wolf” (1923) and “The Apostle of Mob” (1926). Kobylianska’s work is connected with the history and culture of Bukovina, where people of different nationalities have long lived together: Ukrainians, Polish people, Germans, Romanians, Gypsies, etc. As a result of such living, both the idea of Ukrainians and the attitude towards them are formed. As a result of the analysis, it was revealed as negative evaluative characteristics of the linguo-cultural type of “the Ukrainian”: boor, a beggar, a lazy person, indifference to national affairs, a person without a deep culture, a person without a country, hatred against the Poles and perception of them as enemies, and as positive ones: a penchant for creativity, for poetry; musicality. Literary heroes of O. Kobylianska also confirm Orthodoxy, Uniatism, the Ukrainian language, etc. as part of Ukrainian culture.
