Linguistic substantiations of an aesthetic evaluation of literary translation

Abstract

Актуальность исследования обусловлена постоянным интересном к адекватности перевода, особенно литературного. Частью этой проблемы является эстетическая оценка оригинального и переводного текстов и возможность передачи эстетических ценностей при переводе. Целью исследования ставится описать в лингвистических терминах зависимость эстетической оценки от особенностей перевода. Материал исследования включает английские и русские переводные субтитры к японскому мультсериалу «Sword Art Online» и оригинальный текст на японском. Нужно заметить, что перевод на русский производился с английского, в то время как английский текст переводился с японского. Подобный материал был выбран потому, что субтитры редко фигурируют в исследованиях по переводу, а субтитры, полученные после двойного перевода, появляются ещё реже. В качестве метода использовался эксперимент: испытуемым предлагалось оценить различные варианты перевода по шкале от «-2» до «+2». Им предлагалось объяснить причины подобной оценки. Также проводился сравнительный анализ всех переводов. Научная новизна работы заключается в том, что проверке подвергается гипотеза о возможности лингвистической верификации эстетических критериев, а также в выборе для проверки этой гипотезы довольно специфического материала. Теоретическая ценность исследования заключается в выявлении зависимости между оценкой произведения и изменениями при переводе, в выяснении, возможно ли сохранить при переводе эстетические ценности оригинала и в выявлении особенностей перевода, влияющих на эстетическую оценку. Эти материалы могут использоваться для дальнейшего изучения связей между эстетической оценкой и переводными текстами. Работа состоит из введения, трёх глав, заключения, списка литературы и приложения с результатами эксперимента. Список использованной литературы содержит 34 источника. Общий объем диссертации составляет 94 страницы. По итогам исследования были сделаны следующие выводы. Оценки и комментарии информантов показали, что эстетический компонент несомненно присутствует в текстах жанра субтитров, следовательно, расширительное понимание «литературы» и «эстетики» в данном исследовании оправдано. На понижение или повышение эстетической оценки влияет то, насколько хорошо переводчику удалось передать эстетические ценности оригинала и удалось ли придерживаться эстетических норм в процессе перевода. Более всего информанты обращали внимание на нарушение норм в лексической или синтаксической составляющих текста, а также в способах выражения категории вежливости. Информанты при оценивании более всего опираются на собственные нормы, предпочитая привычные конструкции, передачу именных суффиксов японского языка русскими аналогами, русские термины заимствованным. Кроме того, оказалось, что информанты не принимают разговорного стиля и вольного перевода. На качество текста влияет использованный переводчиком на русский английский перевод, что проявилось в построении предложений, в неточной передаче информации и коммуникативных намерений героев. Влияющие на эстетическую оценку понятия (эстетическая функция, норма и ценность) соотносятся с эквивалентностью и адекватностью перевода. Тем не менее, результаты эксперимента показали, что информанты склонны принимать стратегию адекватности, а не эквивалентности, т.е. они предпочитают, чтобы были соблюдены нормы языка перевода и их собственные внутренние нормы.

The relevance of the research is determined by permanent interest to the translation appropriateness, especially to literary translation. Partially this problem is connected with an aesthetic evaluation of original and translated texts and with a possibility of rendering at translation aesthetic values. The goal of research is to describe in terms of linguistics the dependence of aesthetic evaluation on translation features. The data includes subtitles of Japanese animated series “Sword Art Online” translated into English and Russian and original text in Japanese. It is necessary to mention that the Russian text was translated from the English text which was translated from Japanese. Such a peculiar data was chosen because subtitles rarely appear at researches in translation, while subtitles as a result of dual translation appear even more rarely. An experiment, during which subjects were asked to evaluate different variants of translations on a scale from “-2” to “+2”, was used as a method of research. Subjects were also asked to explain why they have chosen this or that evaluation. The comparative analysis of all texts was made as well. An academic novelty lies in the hypothesis about the possibility of linguistic verification aesthetic criteria, in testing this hypothesis, and in choosing for this test rather specific data. An academic value lies in discovering the dependence of text’s evaluation from transformations which took place at translation, in discovering if it is possible to maintain original’s aesthetic values at translation, in discovering translation features, which have an influence on aesthetic evaluation. These data can be used in further study of connections between aesthetic evaluation and translated texts. The paper consists of introduction, three chapters, conclusion, bibliography and an appendix, which contains the results of the experiment. The bibliography contains 34 sources. Totally the paper consists of 94 pages. According to the results of the research the following conclusions have been made. The evaluations and commentaries of subjects showed that an aesthetic component undoubtedly exists in subtitle texts, therefore in this research an expansive interpretation of “literature” and “aesthetics” is reasonable. The extent to which a translator succeeded at rendering aesthetic values of original text and weather he succeeded or not at keeping aesthetic standards at translation both influence on increase and decrease of aesthetic evaluation. Subjects mainly paid attention to irregularities at lexicon and syntax along with means of expressing politeness category. During the evaluation subjects relied most of all on personal aesthetic standards as they preferred familiar constructions, rendering noun suffixes of Japanese by words with similar meaning in Russian, Russian terms to borrowed ones. More than that, subjects appeared not to admit informal style and free translation. The text in English used by Russian translators also influenced on quality of the translation. That could be seen in the construction of sentences, in careless rendering of information and characters’ communicative intensions. The concepts of aesthetic function, aesthetic standard and aesthetic value, which have an influence on aesthetic evaluation, are relevant to the translation equivalence and appropriateness. Nevertheless, the results of the experiment showed that subjects intent to admit the strategy of the appropriateness but not of the equivalence. In other words, they prefer the standards of the target language to be kept as well as their own internal aesthetic standards.
