This article presents an independent study conducted within the framework of the author’s research interests, which are devoted to the study of museum history and museum studies in general, and reflects the main trends of school museum literacy within a single school team. The purpose of this study is to draw attention to the problem of students’ low level of interest in the history of the country and its expression in museum exhibits. The article presents data from a survey conducted among students in grades 5–8, the analysis of which allows us to conclude that there is insufficient training of schoolchildren in the field of cultural and historical knowledge. Fostering patriotism and establishing citizenship among schoolchildren is the cornerstone of education. Elementary basic knowledge about historical and cultural heritage and its role in society should be integrated into the school curriculum not only as theoretical foundations, but also supported in practice, in the process of independent research activities that museum can provide. In addition to studying historical and cultural monuments and the local lore component, the indispensable presence of a museum in schools makes it possible to open a wide field of activity for all age groups of schoolchildren and to satisfy their various needs, complementing, but not replacing, additional education programs without being a coercive tool, and based solely on the enthusiasm and interest of students. The author believes that the problem should be solved comprehensively with the assistance of the governing bodies and school administrations by attracting additional rates for teachers and allocating budget funds for the creation of compulsory museum circles. The fundamental principle is the voluntary participation of students in the process of museum education, which will serve to be more effective than the method of compulsory introduction of electives in this discipline.en_GB
