Analysis and improvement of performance management system in IT company: case of Digital Design

Abstract

The main goal of the study was to analyze problems and gaps in designing performance management system in IT companies addressing industry specifics. The research strategy was qualitative and the methodology was single case study. In order to achieve the main goal, the following objectives were set : To elaborate a framework for analysis and improvement of performance management system in IT company; To analyze general frameworks of performance management system; To understand specifics of IT industry; To identify and prioritize business objectives (that correspond to areas of measurement) relevant for IT industry; To conduct a pilot implementation of a proposed framework in IT company; To analyze current practices of performance management in the company; To design an improved system. Extensive literature review was conducted, that helped to analyze general frameworks and specifics of IT industry, then the theoretical framework for analysis and improvement of performance management system in IT companies was proposed. The empirical study was conducted for identification of relevant business objectives. The results of the study showed the relevant business objectives that correspond to areas of performance measurement and prioritization of these objectives according to the opinions of respondents. The pilot implementation of the proposed framework was conducted in Digital Design, one of the leading IT service providers in Russia. Besides, the theoretical contribution of the work and managerial implications were provided.
