Booklets as a Form of Intellectual Support in the Contemporary Opera Industry: Functions, Strategies, Prospects

Abstract

Оперный спектакль имманентно сложен для восприятия, поэтому нуждается в интеллектуальном сопровождении – доведении до аудитории экстрасценической информации о произведении и постановке. Наиболее распространенной формой интеллектуального сопровождения оперного спектакля является буклет. В данной работе впервые исследуются функции, выполняемые оперным буклетом, стратегии театров относительно составления и распространения буклетов и перспективы развития буклета, даются практические рекомендации по созданию буклетов. Исследованы буклеты российских, европейских, южно- и североамериканских и азиатских театров и оперных фестивалей.

Opera productions are inherently difficult to comprehend, thus evoking a need for intellectual support, i.e. providing the audience with extrahistrionic information about the production. The most common form of intellectual support worldwide is a printed production booklet. This work is the first-ever attempt to explore the functions of the opera production booklet, the opera houses’ strategies of compiling and distributing their booklets, and the prospects of the booklets’ development. The work also suggests practical recommendations for creating opera production booklets. The booklets researched include those of the Russian, European, North & South American, and Asian houses and opera festivals.
