Scientific Supervisor's Review of Olga Chentsova's Bachelor's thesis “Linguistic expert systems: Evidence from the Ingrian language” The graduation thesis of Olga Chentsova is concerned with creation of a prototype of an expert system, which is able to provide a user with most extensive information about the Ingrain language. To fulfill the task Olga Chentsova made a review of expert systems development history and their use for resolving of linguistic problems, she also considered a number of problems, connected with endangered languages. In a practical part of the work Olga Chentsova developed a basic concept of a prototype of an expert system basing on a limited set of requirements and wrote a programming code. Finally, Olga Chentsova filled the prototype with some necessary actual information on the Ingrian language. Novelty of the study is that Olga Chentsova made an attempt to add such an affective method like an expert system to a list of modern resources of language documentation. It is necessary to stress, that Olga Chentsova’s study has also important practical value as the methods developed make possible to describe other Fennic languages and their dialects, as well as any other smaller languages. Olga Chentsova independently chose methods and program tools to make her research and independently searched for materials on the Ingrain language to input to the system. To my opinion, Olga Chentsova’s work, despite of some brevity and some discrepancies between theoretical and practical results of the study, correspond to the requirements of graduation thesis and deserves a positive grade.
